So my readers may recall that I've recently left my job as a car salesman to take up a position with Guest Services at a local theme park. Neither are what I'd consider an "ideal" job, but it's interesting to note that the two jobs share something in common - something that I consider rather odd.
An aversion with male facial hair.
You might recall that the employment company that I went through when first considering a car salesman's position 'forced' me to shave my beard (see The first day of training). While the car dealership didn't mind me re-growing my goatee, it seems that the theme park also has issues with men and beards! I'm allowed a mustache, as long as it doesn't extend past the corners of my mouth - but no goatees and no beards. In the interests of a pay packet, I've decided to go with the mustache rather than retain my newly grown goatee.
By the way, both employers have an issue with my earring as well. I'm almost at the point of just taking it out and letting the hole close over - almost, but not quiet. I'm still 'rebelling' by replacing my earring each night. :)
But I remain puzzled. What is it about conservative America that such an anti-beard bias exists?! Beards can be neat, they're not an indication of an evil personality, many men sport beards and look rather handsome at the same time. Heck, Abe Lincoln had a huge beard, yet he's almost universally revered by Americans.
I still live in the hope that I will eventually find gainful employment in my field AND that I'll be allowed to have a goatee. Time will tell if this is possible. Stay tuned for further updates!
cheers
Ken
